Background
Community development is a foundation stone of active citizenship.
- Auckland city - a vibrant and dynamic community with lots to do
- Auckland city - a rich tapestry of local community life, where people can be involved
- Auckland city - a sustainable community looking to long term needs
- Auckland city - the community you want to belong to
To be vibrant, dynamic and active, a city requires not just economic capital, but social capital. Social capital is the capacity of people in society to come
together voluntarily to create community and prosperity and to address concerns in their community.
Auckland City Council works with community groups, organisations and citizens to build community capacity and to develop and sustain this vision of our community.
The main building blocks we use for this are:
 |
Knowing the strengths and concerns of our community: Proactive liaison in the community. Observing, talking to and listening to the groups we work
with and the citizens we meet out in the community.

 |
Providing venues for people to gather, meet, participate, share information and celebrate: Community centres, halls, leases, noticeboards and open
spaces.

Supporting community networking: Support for local community networks, providing contacts and links so community groups and organisations can meet,
